We do wines with soul since 1919.
The time pass.
Since 1953 we attend you in our head office in Madre Sacramento 16 in Zaragoza. Our wine shop, La Vinatería Yáñez and our offices are born then.
Since 1984 Ciriaco leads La Vinatería Yáñez. Simultaneously he combines the studies, the travels, the painting and writing. The true is that he enjoys a lot.
In 1988 Ciriaco signed his first wine, a special moment for el Taller de Vino Yáñez.
It was the first serie: El Pago de la Almenara, El Alba del Alma, La Hojarasca del Marjal, El Hórreo de los Azulones, Los Álamos del Almirez.
In 1994 Winemaker Yáñez born as a canalise of the travels and experiences in other lands, night’s harvest in the south of France, the Jerez, the first champagne, the first German, Italian, Australian, Chilean, South African,…
In 2007 Hacevinos Yáñez is born, an attempt to systematize all the experiences and microexperiences ongoing. Italy, Germany, France, Australia, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Toro,….
In 2008 the personal project of Ciriaco has born, Yáñez Laderas de Calatayud, the work on chosen plots, the expression of vineyard, the climatic year, the age of the strain, the soil, the terroir.
Today, twenty years after that first Taller, Ciriaco has signed more than one hundred and sixty experiences and microexperiences, many of them were drunk, other ones are contemplate us from our ledges. Wines elaborated in different soils, terroirs, countries.
Now I tell you what is Yáñez, where we come, and where we want to go and I also attach the wines that we can enjoy, they are different, imaginative, serious and smiling. Wines with Soul.
Yáñez we create wines with Soul since 1919.
The Family Yáñez, since 1919 a life with the wine.
We do wines with soul.
Our family has been in contact with wine since ever, our paternal and maternal grandparents worked the lands of the best winemaking of the Ribera del Duero. The great-grandfather Ciriaco was the prototype of farmer lover of the land and knower of the grapevine, without conditions or resources, but full of knowledge. From our father we learnt to recognise the potential of people, of lands, of wines, and their diffusion, and our son has already harvested with us. The last 30 years we have discovered wines that, after some vintage, have been consecrated between the biggest brands. This style, the businessman to the French manner, has filled our days, our glasses; we have known great people, magnificent winegrowers, big businessmen and above all lands, regions, terroir,…places where wine flourish as an element of union and creation, as an element of communion between people. These places, these people, have been for us an admirably model of actions that we wanted to realize, invaluable motivation to paint our linen cloths, to pick our own grapes, to full our own bottles, to design our own labels, to be happy labouring, to make happy to the people that relation with us and they honour to us with its confidence, to choose our wines, the Yáñez wines.
From this feeling, from this idea born the concept YÁÑEZ, Hacevinos Yáñez, Winemaker Yáñez, and Taller de Vino Yáñez have been some of the projects we have signed. So since 1989 we make wines with soul.
In these dates Ciriaco considers to do and commercialize different wines, wines that in his own words: “Tell a story”. They are the first wines from the Taller, simple experiments that are consolidated in the time and remain until nowadays. At these first simple wines are added in a short period of time, the first experiences in different denominations: In Somontano and in the installations from the regional cooperative of Sobrarbe born the first Yáñez, a funny and friendly wine, the next years we did a marvellous reserve, the first microexperience of Parraleta, only to enjoy ourselves, and after that with the new winemaking Pirineos, fifteen great wines from special whites, to young, crianzas, reserves, big reserves, and expressions. A great work that allowed to our Ciriaco learns, seeks and finds small jewels. A red wine over matured of Garnachas in Terra Alta that was wonderful and very expensive, we have taken pleasure in this wine during ten years, and finally we have drunk all because only liked to Ciriaco. A experience in Jerez due to the persistence of our winemaker to become skilled at doing sweet wines, the first international wine in the Languedoc, the first night harvests, with mining helmet of Merlot and Cabernet and the great chops with the dawn, the smiles and the illusions in the distant 1996. Those wines we did in France were the teaching to do modern wines in Spain, the first peek to the work in the field, the first peek to the work with white varieties, the first peek to the wood’s world and the compromise with the fruit. By that time the first Ribera del Duero with the name of our boss Mr José Yáñez was presented in the market. It was the vintage 1994 and here Ciriaco was found with an amazing year and an excellent work of vine in Boada de Roa, with the Tempranillo, the Tinto Fino, born a classic Ribera, as well as in Rioja, in Villamediana de Iregua many youngs, crianzas, reserves and big reserves with semi-new oaks and traditional tastes, a concept would see revised and overcome in the following years with the experiences Intento, with Riojas with soul of Riberas del Duero, the helping of Don Pedro Vivanco was invaluable, dignified, and worthy of a great eternal gratefulness, also Sergio Galar is always there collaborating and endeavouring, intimate friends and wonderful professionals, thank you.
Also for that years a fallen experience in Priorato, and a great education in the D.O. Cava in Villafranca, a lot, a lot learnt for then being able to apply in Calatayud where would born our funnier child, the Cava Yáñez-Otroyo, magnificent, lovely and complex, it would not have been able born without Cesar Langa, a fabulous professional that makes easy what is difficult, thanks Cesar.
And a small experience with the Garnachas from Miedes, in the Cooperative San Alejandro, where Yolanda Diaz leads a formidable equip, with that it is an honour to talk. In Borja in the installations of Borsao is worked with some of the more interesting Garnachas from Moncayo and there ours Nohacer born. In Cariñena we enjoyed a lot and a great gratitude with Rafael Diaz, Nacho Lazaro and Jesús Navascues in Bodegas Añadas, a very special coupage born with the name of Ender, many ilussions and a big desire to break with topics about all the region. The farms from Bodegas Añadas are incredible, care lightened are columns sculpted in the air full of life. Some of the best moments that I remember in a vineyard I have passed in the Finca Bancales eating grapes, drinking wine and walking between the vines. The time goes passing and we reinvent our relationship with the Ribera del Duero, we make a new experience with the Tinto Fino as flag and the wood and the selection in the land as a conductive idea, from this experience will appear some “Riberas”, some “Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León” and some “Toro”. To all of this, we have to add the experiences in Italy with the Moscatos, in Germany with the Riesling, in France with the Champagne, in Argentina with the Malbec, in Australia with the Shyrah…¿Why all this dispersion? The enthusiasm, the desire of learning, of living the life, of drinking the life in big sips. And we met with the new years of the new century and Ciriaco fell in love of an Aragonesian region, here, near from home. It is not in Australia, not in Germany, not in California, here in Calatayud, old centenarian strains, spaces that seems to be sculptures from the beginning of times, incredible vineyards anxious and capable of giving a brilliant quality, blinding, expressive, and great professionals Carmelo Lozano, Clemente Lorcas.
In this point arise the question, ¿Why does Ciriaco fall in love of Calatayud? ¿Why does he choose these lands and these people to take form all that he has learnt in other lands and other companies? We have asked him, and this is what he has answered us:
You see, ¿Why do I choose this land? Because I fall in love of this land from Calatayud, and I choose it to create the new wines Yáñez, because after seeing many countries, drinking many wines, knowing many wonderful people, of learning, of asking to the rest and wonder to myself, here surprise me the tact of the soil, the colour of the sky, the smell of the air, the sound of the wind. This all makes me fancy to do different things that those I have been doing during twenty years, four periods, two decades, many time ago.
Now I do desire to know every strain, every strain from every parcel, from every high, from every terrace, from every wine that will come to his hands for the first time with the name of Yáñez written in the tag. Many illusions and projects come together here and now, in these wonderful terraces, in these ravines, in these suffering lands and in these survivor vineyards.
In this corner of the world I have had the fortune to find great people as Carmelo Lozano and Clemente Lorcas, and Jose María, they are in charge of Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón. Two thousand and five hundred hectares of magnificent vineyards to select; here in these slopes; in these hills, there are improver strains and even more important; slaty terraces where live wonderful and very old Garnachas, three magnificent warehouses where there are many hopes deposited, technical medias and many illusions. Many illusions, enthusiasm, and good people only can give a result: a great wine. I would like to invite you to see, to know, and to enjoy these wines, these lands, and appreciate these people from the region of Calatayud, as Carmelo or Clemente. I would like to tell you that I have got to selection the best parcels, that I have worked with Jose María for the best hillsides will be cultivated with all the love and the rigour, for the vine-grower that work with us see reverberated this effort in the worth of their lands, in a mayor performance of their work, to make better wines to be able to pay them more for their grapes. Also for all of us can fell ourselves proud of the wines that we dream in these lands and that they are the expression of a land, a terroir, a character. Tradition and innovation, ideas and realities, illusion and effort. All of this that I tell you it born now and will develop, if God wants, with all our enthusiasm and love in the next years. We see to each other ahead of a great wine, a wine with soul.
As you see Ciriaco is convinced to be in the right way, and we, after to taste his wines also. I tell you a little bit of this marvellous zone and these lands and vineyards where Ciriaco wants to dream our wines.
The vineyards extend from the River Jalón to the north, deep into the Systema Ibérico mountain range to the south, and are centred on the river valleys of the Jiloca and the Perejiles. they are situated at altitudes of between 600 and over 1000 metres (2000 – 3300 feet), with the higher sites dominated by Old-Vine Garnacha and the lower sites by Tempranillo principally together with Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot.
We have to selection more than 1000 hectares of Garnacha that it is in production, more than half are Viñas Viejas, planted more than 40 years ago. These low yielding vineyards are our “jewel in the crown”, providing consistently outstanding fruit that transmit the characteristics of the region to the wine and that it makes the wine invaluable, only the age and the care obtain it. We also selection over 400 hectares of Tempranillo, planted on the lower slopes, in soils of finer texture, provides the backbone for many of our Crianza wines. The structure and aging ability of our Tempranillo wines make them ideally suited to being matured in oak barrels, both for traditional Reserva and for more modern varietal styles with the present fruit where the vineyards of more than 15 years old and a half production we obtain a perfect characteristics for the coupage.
In 1990 it was planted the first Shyrah and now we selection over 140 hectares planted on our poorest soils to reduce the variety’s natural vigour. ”The coupage that I like more is the Garnacha and Shyrah” tell us Ciriaco always he can.
Macabeo (Rioja’s Viura) is the traditional indigenous white variety of Calatayud and produces fresh, fruit-driven white wines, which fit perfectly with modern tastes. We selection over more than 250 Hectares of this variety, much planted as bush-vines, alongside the Garnacha in the high altitude vineyards.
Alongside these varietals, we also selection smaller plantings of Monastrell, as well as the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
We work with three winemaking facilities, each central to its vineyard area. This proximity ensures that our most precious resources, the grapes, arrive at the bodega in prime condition, without having to endure long road journeys and then begins the magic.
In the three winemaking have modern winery equipment and installations. This investment has been concentrated on the items necessary for the production of high quality wines; temperature control, stainless steel tanks, pneumatic presses, new American and French barrels (from the best cooper: Radoux, Dargaude & Jaefle, Mercurey, Saury, Taransaud…), a state-of-the-art bottling line, material´s laboratory and the small things that makes easy what it is difficult, although the more important thing is the vineyard.
Los viñedos Áreas Vinícolas
In a mountainous region criss-crossed by deep river valleys, the landscape and microclimates change rapidly. This provides us with a great variety of different vineyard sites, each with their own individual qualities and potential.
Ermita de San Antón
The southern slopes of Mt. Atalaya and Mt. Peñas, around the villages of Valtorres, La Vilueña and Carenas, provide some of our best white grapes. The Macabeo vines, many of which are of considerable age, produce grapes with intense flavours and aromas.
Sierra de Pardos
The massive Sierra de Pardos dominates the southern villages of the region. The higher vineyards of Abanto, Castejón de Alarba and Alarba are mostly devoted to Garnacha, while the lower slopes produce some of our best Tempranillo and Syrah.
The finer, less stony soils around Munébrega and Olves are important for Tempranillo, much of which is destined for our Crianza and Reserva wines. The poorer soils are mainly planted with Garnacha and Macabeo.
Sierra de Santa Cruz
At altitudes of between 800 and 1000 metres, with steeply sloping slate vineyards, the village of Acered provides much of our finest old-vine Garnacha. The extreme mountain climate and poor soils produce tiny yields of high quality fruit.
Valle de Jiloca
The left bank of the River Jiloca, with it’s mixture of limestone and terrarossa is ideally suited to Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, which require fine-textured soils and a more temperate climate. The historic villages of Paracuellos de Jiloca, Maluenda and Morata de Jiloca are amongst the most important in this area.
Sierra de Vicor
The south western slopes of the Sierra de Vicor, in the shadow of the Pico del Rayo are another major source of old-vine Garnacha, which thrives in the stony soils above the villages of Villalba de Perejil, Belmonte de Gracián and Mara.
Although perhaps best known internationally as the Grenache of the Rhone Valley in Southern France, Garnacha is almost certainly native to Spain. Characteristically, Garnacha wines have high alcohol, moderate colour, low tannins and are redolent of red fruits, but styles vary widely according to soils, climate and the age of the vines. Old vine Garnacha from poor soils and marginal climates can produce wines of considerable power and complexity.
Without doubt, Tempranillo is the pre-eminent quality grape in Spain. It is found under many names; Tinto Fino on the Duero, Tinto de Toro in the north-west, Cencibel in La Mancha and, of course Tempranillo in Rioja and across Northern Spain. Characterised by moderate alcohol, soft fruit and a natural affinity with the flavours imparted by oak barrels, Tempranillo is the natural choice for many of Spain’s Crianza and Reserva wines.
The great variety of the Northern Rhone and Australia, where it is known as Shiraz, is a fairly recent addition to the vineyards of Spain, but it has already shown its potential in our warmer climates. Syrah produces dark, powerful wines with considerable extract and tannin, often reminiscent of black fruit, spices and pepper. The classic blend of the structured Syrah with the softer, fruitier Garnacha is a perfect marriage recognized around the world.
Another native Spanish Variety that has crossed the border to France (as Mouvedre), Monestrell’s home is the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The potential of this dark variety is its meaty character.
The great red grape of Bordeaux has found a home in most of the wine-producing countries of the world, both as a varietal and as an important component in blends. Its prodigious structure and unmistakable cassis fruit can provide a welcome addition to the softer qualities of the native Tempranillo, and augment the wine’s ageing potential.
Most at home in the cool clay soils of Pomerol and St Emilion, where it produces some of the world’s greatest wines, Merlot needs to be planted in cool locations if it is to thrive in Spain. Most commonly, it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, where it’s fleshy texture and plum fruit can complement it’s more assertive partner.
Also known as Carineña in Spain (after the Aragonese region) and Carignan in France, this native variety provides welcome tannic structure and acidity to many traditional blends. Though rarely seen as a varietal wine, Mazuelo is a vital component in many Crianza wines across Northern Spain.
Our pre-eminent white variety, often planted as bush-vines in the most ancient vineyards, it is known as Viura in La Rioja, Macabeo has come into it’s own with the advent of temperature-controlled fermentation. Its soft fruit and balanced acidity are perfectly suited to modern tastes in wine.
One of the most ancient of all varieties, Malvasia has been grown since Roman times and extends across the Mediterranean countries, from Greece to Spain. Its popularity has waned in recent years, probably due to it’s low acidity and tendency to oxidize, but the distinctive character of Malvasia can provide white blends with an unmistakable touch of class.
Calatayud has a broadly continental climate, characterised by warm summers and cold winters. Rainfall is relatively low (less than 350mm per year) and summer temperatures are moderated by the altitude. This altitude also contributes to the wide diurnal (day-night) temperature range of 12.5°C which provides ideal conditions for viticulture.
Average daytime temperatures range from just over 30°C in July and August to around 10°C in December and January. This moderate climate ensures a long growing season and slow ripening of our fruit, while the cool nights provide the vines with the opportunity to rest and help to preserve acidity.
Rainfall, though low, is concentrated in the early part of the growing season, with half the annual rain falling between April and July. In contrast, the late summer is usually warm and dry, interrupted by only the occasional thunder storm.
The northern edge of the Systema Iberico is geologically complex, so much so that the area around Monestario del Piedra is a popular destination for students of Geology.
The high altitude vineyards to the south and east of Calatayud largely consist of slate and quartzite over sandstone from the tertiary period shaped by glacial activity. These soils, largely made up of stones and crumbled slate, are low in nutrients, well drained and planted mainly with bush-vine Garnacha.
Lower down, in the sub-valleys that feed the rivers Jiloca and Perejiles, the bedrock is more varied (including limestone and conglomerates) and the soils contain more clay, but vary from site to site. Some vineyards have a high calcareous content, while others contain high levels of quartzite stones on the surface.
The alluvial soils in the valley floors, generally have a fine texture and an absence of large stones or pebbles. These sand and silt based soils are mainly planted with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
You see, we have created more than one hundred and sixty wines in the last twenty years all over the world, to the way of the American and Australian winemakers and the French merchant, many of these wines have been microexperiences of a unique barrel that have been consuming with a mixture of enjoying and desolation due to its end. Now the wines that still stand in our shelf and galleries are these ones and their prices, in case you like them.
